fuckyeahsocialjusticesally:

A while back there was a horribly long rant about Ellen Page stating that although she’d never given any comments to anyone about her sex life, there was evidence that she was gay/bi and that she was an awful person and a disgrace to the gay community for not being “actively” gay and thus making it more acceptable to be so.  Because anyone in the public eye is required to tell the world about everything they do and must be outed if they don’t.  Apologies if someone has mentioned it before.

See also, Sally Ride after she passed away.  Nobody knew she had been with a woman for the past almost-30 years, and a lot of queer people were angry that she didn’t “stand up” and “be an activist” for gays and lesbians.

Let’s never mind the fact that she empowered girls and women to get into STEM; let’s never mind that she championed science education — she was gay and she didn’t “come out”, therefore we should be angry.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, gets to tell a person (regardless of their notoriety) what to do with their sexual identity.

I’ve seen this mentality used for people who aren’t celebrities as well. Outing someone else is considered
